Doctor Bruce Withers

Dr. Withers graduated from Michigan State University in 1992. He has worked in the Kalamazoo community in private and emergency practices since 1995. He purchased Eighth Street Veterinary Care in 2007 from Dr. Hassing. Dr. Withers especially enjoys the daily interactions with clients and their pets, and has a special interest in dentistry, surgery, and mammalian exotics. He has 3 children, and 3 cats. His hobbies include bicycling and serving at church.


Doctor Gayle Penning

Dr. Penning graduated from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1978. She first practiced on both livestock and small animals for about 10 years, but has worked exclusively in small animal medicine at Eighth Street for the last 8 years. She has worked in laboratory medicine as well. Dr. Penning splits her time to work on her family landscape business, which is also a personal hobby. She enjoys being outside, primarily hiking, bicycling, running, and gardening. She has a dog and 5 cats. She is married and has 2 children as well as a new grandchild.


Amy Stephenson, Chief of Staff

Amy has been working for Eighth Street since 2011 and came to us as a certified vet assistant. She worked in the restaurant business for over 20 years using her extensive management experience, however, her true love is working with animals. Amy has 3 children and a cat named Snoopy. In her spare time she loves going for long hikes and cycling.


Amy Judd (AJ), Assistant

After working at many veterinarians Amy came to us in July of 2016. She had been a dog groomer full time for 10 years while she now enjoys grooming part time, her true passion is working with and helping animals. She and her husband have 5 dogs and a leopard gecko. In her spare time, she loves being in nature and having bonfires.


Talisa VanDenBerg, VT

Talisa has worked at Eighth Street Veterinary Care since 2007 and has been working as a Veterinary Technician for 19 years. She loves to go for walks in the park with her family and dogs. Talisa and her husband have 2 daughters, 3 dogs and 2 cats.


Linda Kaplan, Assistant

Linda has been working at Eighth Street Veterinary Care since 2013. She is currently going to college for Pre-Vet and wants to eventually become a Veterinarian specialized in Oncology. Linda enjoys reading and yoga on her days off and has 1 dog, 2 cats, 4 chinchillas, and an aquarium full of fish!


Molly Alphenaar, Assistant

Molly worked at Eighth Street Veterinary Care for 25 years until 2013 when she left to work in the field of pharmacy. Though she enjoyed the time there, she always missed working with and caring for the pets and their people. Molly is married and enjoys spending time with her family, playing pickleball, and being outdoors.


Abigail Boswell, Receptionist

Abigail has been working at Eighth Street Veterinary Care since April 2016. She currently attends Western Michigan University and is pursuing a bachelors degree in Organizational Communication with a minor in business management. She enjoys outdoor activities, playing soccer, painting, and spending time with her friends.


Peggy Simonds, Receptionist/Accounting

Peggy has worked at Eighth Street Veterinary Care part time as a receptionist and accountant for many years. She divides her time between the clinic and her local family business. Peggy is married and has 2 married sons and 4 grand kids. She and her husband enjoy spending time at their property up north. Peggy has 2 miniature donkeys, 2 rabbits and 2 dogs.


Nikki Dwire, Assistant


Nikki joined Eighth Street in 2015 as a certified Veterinary Assistant and has a passion for working with animals and people. Before joining Eighth Street she worked in the field of early childhood development and volunteered for animal rescue organizations. Nikki and her husband have 3 kids, 3 dogs, and 6 cats. She enjoys spending time with her family, adventuring outside, and scrap booking.
